说要我们参与,"to make our voices heard"。 其实,我们都知道,"our voices are heard, but who is listening?"
“Be good in what you do best. And it's always good to have some political awareness."

Tell me when you need me- A Sceptical Patriotism
It was not until lately that I realise there are actually many young, budding patriots existing in our society. Some are my friends, some are acquaintances, and some are just strangers. But they all carry the same hearts, the same thoughts and the same mission to contribute and to save our beloved nation.
We, the 20-year-olds, have come to an important juncture in our lives. Either we are highly educated or we aren’t; either we are doing great in lives or we aren’t, we all share the same responsibility and the same task — we have to play a part in nation-building, sooner or later.
Or, at least these are what we have been told all this while.
What appears to me is otherwise.
The government has no intention to take you in. They will forbid you, rather than giving you the chance to contribute towards the progress and advancement of the nation. Of course, people will say, things have changed. We have the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) and Talentcorp. The government is now ready to bring back the talents who have reluctantly bid goodbye to their homeland, which has forsaken them long time ago. Our leaders are serious in transforming our country.
And yet we hear some radical racists and disrespectful remarks are made, from time to time. The mind and the body do not move at the same pace. We boast to the world about our multiracial and multicultural heritage, yet every race is singing a different tune.
I still remember when I was 17, I was a young writer and full of ambitious ideas for the country. I penned the dissatisfaction and the anger on newspapers like Sinchew Daily and Malaysiakini. It used to be my dream to voice out through the power of words. From here as well, I have made friends with many people with the same aim and the same hope.
What we want is just a better future for the country.
And it wasn’t long that I realised, voicing out through words, is a dangerous act in the country. As quoted by a famous columnist, “Being a journalist in Malaysia is like being a performer in the circus, who is walking on a tightrope. If you are not careful enough, you will fall into pieces.”
Soon, I heard about the empowerment of the youth. I took part in Malaysian Student Leaders Summit (MSLS) and met many like-minded people around my age. From that event, I knew there are many out there who still decide to give our country a chance. And thus, the burning passion reignites. I interacted with the students around, exchanging ideas on how to help our country, as well as involving myself in some inspiring discourses. This brought me to join the United Kingdom and Eire Council of Malaysian Students (UKEC) in London.
We invited prominent speakers to discuss recent happenings in the country. We have held activities to raise political awareness among the students. We believe that no matter how little the significance of our efforts, we have achieved something at least — to plant the seeds of hope in the younger generation.
The positive things are done, but what are the changes?
Many may comment, we are paving the way for the next generation if we couldn’t make it this time. The effect will manifest itself in a subtle way. But after so many years, what we can observe is that we have been doing so much, but the leaders are not listening.
When the students are not going back to serve the country, we scold them because they are selfish and they betray the trust given by the taxpayers. How is it that, by pursuing self-improvement is a bad thing? Many will argue that the country needs the talents right now, to drive the nation forward. However, when we take a look carefully, famous figures like Professor Dr Danny Quah and KS Pua, the first USB flash drive inventor, if they did not leave the country and move on to pursue better lives for themselves, how can they possess the skills that our nation needs for development right now?
Plus, how much are they worth in the government’s eyes? This is an important point to ponder as well.
The age-old proverb says, “If you can’t beat them, join them”. Many political veterans, I believe, when they entered the political arena back then, had great ideas and strong spirit. Nevertheless, judging from the situation right now, many have joined the crippled system. How sure are we, that we can beat them? And when we think about Beng Hock’s sacrifice, how many of us are still so firm in changing the current system, by exchanging our families, our friends and most importantly our lives?
After so many years, we are still fighting for our rights, we are still debating about racial issues and we are still quarrelling on religious matters; a vicious cycle that we have had enough.
This is not a post to whine and to complain about the situation in the country, or to extinguish the passion and the courage put forward by the young Malaysians out there. It is just a friendly reminder for the younger generation out there, including myself, to sit down and think seriously, how can we help our nation, when all else has failed?
Not just with passion and ambition, but with real skills and actions.
Enough of optimism. Be realistic.
So, Malaysia, tell me when you are ready.
Tell me when you need me. I will definitely be back in time.

Realization of a Frog
That day after my lectures, I went to attend this talk by the excutive editor of The Economist, Daniel Franklin in Imperial.
Pretty much a general talk, discussing about the world in 2010. He gave his opinions on the events which are going to happen in 2010.
In chronological order, here goes some of the significant events.
Jan 2010- Post- Copenhagen period. A conference which aims to review the Kyoto Protocol which is going to expire in the year 2012. But, it did not yield any encouraging results.
April 2010- Run-up to Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty review conference. Obama Nuclear-free-world speech in Prague. Iran and N.Korea are the two countries in discussion.
May 2010- British General Election. David Cameron (Conservatives) vs Gordon Brown (Labour).
May 2010- Start of Shanghai Expo. Rivalry between Shanghai and Beijing emerges, as Beijing was the host for 2008 Olympics Game.
June 2010- World Cup in South Africa. First time being held in the African continent. The significance are (demographic dividend, investment from China/India, etc).
August 2010- Combat troops of US will retreat from Iraq by this month.
September 2010- UN General Assembly. A new form of global governance and interactions. G8, G20 etc. As US and China are gradually appearing as the world most influential nations, it's time to hold a G2 meeting.
October 2010- Brazil election. It's now important because it's one of the member in BRIC (Brazil, Russia India and China). However, Russia current economy seems to be dwindling down.
November 2010- Asia Games in Guangzhou.
- APEC Summit in Yokohoma.
- US Mid-term election. Time to review Obama's performances and popularity.
In general, the world in 2010 is full of tribulations. Basically, China is the main attention of the year, especially for the people in business field.
Well, after listening to his talk, although I felt so tired (even slept while he was delivering his speech), I was glad to be there that night.
I couldnt believe that after three-four months in Imperial, my life has changed tremendously. I used to read at least one or two newspapers and comment on some of the issues back then. But now, I buried my nose into the books and literally got out of touch from the world.
Here, current issues do not really matter, I guess? I remembered that I used to discuss and debate with a friend about political matters, and from vowing to change the situations, to losing the momentum to do so. How pathetic!
As the Malay proverb goes, "katak di bawah tempurung". Well, I guess the books are the tempurung for me now.

A tale of a three-legged stool
Ever imagined if one day, one leg overruled the other, what will happen to the stool?
Actually this kind of incidents have occurred for countless times, yet no serious action has been taken.
I am foreseeing that moment. When one leg finally overruled the other, it's the moment when the stool falls.
P/S: Due to my current status, I need to abide by the law. So, have a look on limkitsiang blog if u are curious about what I have written above.

A day in KLCC
And, on the way, we met a cute Japanese student who was losing her direction to KL Sentral. Therefore, my mum offered to help her out and taught her the way. *She also told her I am her son, and asked me to exchange emails and names. I wondered what is my mum doing..O_o*
From left to right: Mum, Atsuko
So, later we went to KLCC and took our lunch. Later, we just went to Isetan and chose some clothes and a pair of jeans.
And, at the book fest, I was honoured to meet up with some famous local columnists, like 许国伟, who holds a discussion with Jamaluddin on 988 radio station every morning 8-10am; 欧阳文风, who is best known for his cognitive theory, education philosophy and gay issue; and of course, not to forget the renowned Sinchew Daily editor, 郑丁贤, who is good in criticising the government's policies in a subtle, yet sarcastic way.
So, these are some of the shots taken this evening.

Today, is a tiring day, yet a fruitful and enriching day. It's good to have a chance to meet up with the real persons behind those thought-provoking articles.

Malaysian Student Leaders Summit 2009
It's the 3rd year for this event. Yet, frankly speaking, it faired worse than last year.
Firstly, the speakers list in the website is quite deceiving. Most of the speakers, I mean the big shots were not even present.
Secondly, it's so pathetic to substitute an 'impromptu' youth forum and four different students from various universities Majlis Perwakilan Pelajar (MPP) just had to discuss some topics to pass time. (Yet, they even stopped an Egyptian to share his thoughts. Yea, it's abit unfair for using most of the time, but since this event attracts foreign students, we should let him to share his experience in his country or similar events, so that we can benefit from that.) =.=
Thirdly, most of the stduents (of course, this includes me as well) were out there to chat and know new friends, rather than staying inside the cold, boring hall for the last lecture on Article 153 of the Constitution. They even cancelled the group presentation.
The only good things were the discussions amongs group members, the food of Hotel Nikko and some unexpected networkings. lol.
I had the opportunity to snap a picture with Tan Sri Koh Tsu Koon, and met with a alumnus of Yale University, of course there were some seniors from Imperial, new friends from Warwick, UCL, Cambridge, UPenn, Uni College Dublin and a cute girl who is heading to Sydney.
So in short, the good things outweigh the bad ones. I will give a rating of 6.5/10.
End notes: When a friend asked me last year, would you go for this year MSLS, I would say, let's just see how's the speakers list featured. And, for next year, I would say, let's just dont visit the webpage, and sign up according to your intuition. The list is not convincing enough. =)

Utusan Malaysia)

Given a choice, would you work in Malaysia?
Let's get the ball rolling..
Malaysia, as a developing country, we have managed to build magnificent skyscraper like Petronas Twin Tower, world-class Sepang F1 circuit, and hosted many significant world conferences like NAM and OIC, as well as being the host for the 16th Commonwealth Game in 1998. Plus, every year, (if we could just have an official statistic on brain drain), many young and vibrant, talented Malaysian students get admitted into the top universities in the world.
So, by reading the examples above, we can say that, our country is obviously better than many others Third World Countries which are impoverished and under-developed. Therefore, to compare with them, is not a good way to improve ourselves. The countries we should compare, or more precisely speaking, observe would be Japan, Singapore, India and China. (or maybe Vietnam)
It's just the same as an excellent student who always wants to get admitted into some prestigious universities in the world, rather than opting for our local public universities which are constantly sliding between 200-400. Going for the best is the only way to be better.
Japan, which was almost destroyed in WW2 by the atomic bomb, not to mentioned many of its citizens are born handicapped due to the radiations. But, in about 50 years' time, we can see how its education system has evolved, by having the arguably toughest entrance exam in the world. Japan is so advanced in its science and technology. But, Japan is ranked in top 5 of having the highest suicide percentage due to high stress levels.
Singapore, our twins. Separated in 1965. Started from scratch, yet we can see how Lee Kuan Yew brings up Singapore to be a well-respected and renowned small island. Both NUS and NTU made it into top 100, with 30 and 70 respectively in THES-QS ranking table. Singapore, with little natural resources, able to excel tremendously in economy and education. However, due to the elitism mentality and the high stress levels, we can read from the newspapers that most of the professionals are acting wild and uncontrollable at times. And politics, in the near future, I dont think PAP will lose, let alone fostering a strong democratic nation, like what we see in USA and UK.
For China and India, their GDPs are growing gradually despite the financial slump. And, in terms of education and economy, again they are the leaders in Asian region, if not the world. And, if you have read before a book entitled 'The World is Flat" by Thomas L. Freidman, you will see Mumbai and Calcutta is the next biggest Silicon Valley in the near future. However, the gap between the rich and the poor is getting wider days in days out, and this is not a good sign if they are to come up with a stable society. And, for this, those who have watched "Slumdog Millionaire", will know about the actual scenario happening in India. For China, if you have been following the international news for years, you will come to see that many poor Chinese are living in an impoverished condition. Child abuse is rampant nowadays.
What am I trying to point out is, there is no country in the word which is as perfect as decribed by Plato in his book Republic.
In conclusion, we should always be grateful that we are born in this country. Three majority races and the minorities in East Malaysia, with so many local scrumptious delicacies, with an abundance of cultural heritages and of course with a colourful history.
While for the racial discrimination, Malay superiority mentality (Ketuanan Melayu) by some conservative right-wing Malays, it is for us, the younger generation to change. It's obviously hard. That's why we should study abroad, learn how a good democratic nation is being administered and gain the knowledge required to help our nation. And, contribute what we have learnt to our government.
We don't abandon a toddler who is learning to crawl, but instead we teach him to walk right?
I have seen many Malays are well aware of what is happening in our country. And, the Chinese, Indian and other minorities are willing to forgive and come back to serve the country.
I know, I am being simply idealistic, to form a Utopia. But, remember all things are started off with a little dream.
What say you?^^

Of Broken Windows and Zero-sum
Try to imagine this, there are some broken windows on a dilapidated building. If the windows are not repaired, vandals tend to break more windows. Or, if the building is unoccupied, they may stay inside, and become squatters.
A seemingly small problem, if unresolved, will result in a bigger one.
Zero-Sum
Secondly, I have come across this phrase for many times in commentaries, (but lazy to check it out XD), and when i read something about the competition of globalisation in the 21st century. I found a sarcastically-written story about competition.
Two hunters were chased after by a gigantic bear. Both hunters ran for their lives. At a certain point of time, Hunter A knew that the bear will come after them, as they began to feel tired. He suggested Hunter B that through co-operation, perhaps they have the chance to win the bear.
Hunter B replied, "Why should I run faster than the bear? I just need to run faster than you."
Zero-sum game. A concept which crushes your competitor is the only way to win the game.
Seems cruel huh? Well, if you are observant enough, vivid examples can be taken around you.

A Forgiving Festival
Today, the Muslims will celebrate Hari Raya. the Chinese and the Indians will be having a two-day public holidays.
With the current unstable political and economical scenario, this festive season seems to provide a temporary shelter for the nation to rest and relax. Today, nobody shall call other races penumpang, nobody shall question the privileges of the "aborigines".
Today, is a day where we just go and have fun. Eat all you can in all sorts of kenduri. Pay a visit to your Malay friends.
Forget about the 916 power transition plan. It's lost its charisma. It is now no more than a joke we discuss in kopitiam. Anyway, perhaps Anwar is playing with his grandson right now.
Whether Abdullah will step down and hand over the PM post to Najib, to fulfill the prophecy of RAHMAN, this is not supposed to be discussed today. Both of them maybe still joke around in the PM's public kenduri.
Hari Raya Aidilfitri!

It's Too Late to Apologise
I was listening to the song composed by One Republic, whilst reading a piece of article on The Stars, about the recent racist remark by Ahmad Ismail. (Don't know who is him? Yea, he shouldn't be that well-known after all..^^)
Never mind, as a responsible and rational blogger, I think I should talk about him a little. Well, he is nothing more than a typical inconsiderate and brainless politician. An UMNO leader(is he one?)-Bukit bendera UMNO chief.
He made a statement on Aug 23, (I am not putting words into his mouth), that the Chinese are squatters or immigrant or pendatang . Then, he disappeared in thin air. When he came back, he tried to deny his words, by giving an unreasonable excuse-that the statement is made merely because he is pointing out the status of the Chinese during pre-merdeka period.
However, maybe he has forgotten about this. Let me do the job of reminding him. Our country has just celebrated the 51st National Day on Aug 31. All the races have walked through hard and happy times for half a century. Wonder why would he mentioned something long time ago? (Weird, huh?)
And now, after stating a such controversial remark, he doesn't even plan to say sorry, but instead,he points his fingers towards the media. From here, we could see, he is hardly a leader, or even a responsible normal being.
While all the politicians are trying their best to overcome the racial problems, inequalities of sharing in economy and education, and public resentment, this man is ruining up everything by just using his words.
How could UMNO still accept his apology, oh no, i forgot, his "well-prepared" and "nicely-phrased" explanation, I should say. This is totally ridiculous. Frankly speaking, from pre-merdeka period until now, the Chinese is the pillar of our nation economy. Without the Chinese, Malaysia economy might still stagnate, and at the most deal with the lembu and kerbau, or the bayam and ubi.
I really couldn't figure out why he would make such a nonsensical and meaningless statement. To gain support from the radical Malays? To be well-known for the coming General Assembly of UMNO?
This is just a person's remark. It has raised up the dissatisfaction and anger of the Chinese. And how about, BTN(Biro Tatanegara)? Have you heard before?
Well, BTN is an organization or more precisely a governmental department. It's role is to brainwash our young brilliant brains(I mean the JPA scholars) before they leave for overseas.
For your information, i received an email of a resentful mother sharing about what's her daughter undergoing while attending the JPA briefing.
The bumi-s and the non-bumis are separated during the briefing session. They will tell the scholars that the non-bumis are merely immigrants (they seem to have forgotten that the Malays are actually from Yunan province as well). The non-bumis should be thankful and be contented of having the rights to earn a living on this land-Malaysia. A land where we now begin to doubt its maturity level of thinking and the advancement level it can reach by 2020.
They were even being told that they shouldn't complain about the ratio of 90:10 for the JPA Overseas Scholarship. They shouldn't agree with the proposal of opening 10% of the seats for non-bumis in UiTM.
Every year there are thousands over students being brainwashed in such a ridiculous way. And, there are thousands more to come next years. The government should realise about this and the consequences of getting this going on. But, any action has been taken?
As usual, none at all.
How are we going to expect our nation to become the economy and education hub of Asian regions when many out there are still living in the lullaby entitled "Ketuanan Melayu"?
What can we foresee in the next 10 years? A developed nation as promised? or a nation devastated by some wrong perceptions or ideologies uphold by the radical ones?
