R.I.P Yasmin Ahmad

Yasmin Ahmad (1958-2009), arguably the best movie director Malaysia has ever produced, passed away last Saturday night due to stroke and brain haemorrhage.

A true patriot, a humble film maker who has been always promoting national unity through her movies and advertisements and a sincere lady who has attempted to produce movies which transcend cultures, races, and religions.

Though she has left us in such a premature way, her spirits and efforts will always be remembered in our hearts. The heart-warming Petronas advertisements which remind us of the value of filial piety during major festive seasons, and of course, never forget the thought-provoking Merdeka advertisements by Petronas as well.

Those ads are put in such a way, where no special effects are being used. What we see, are what we feel. She is described as one of the rarest gems in the vast sea, and I am afraid I couldnt agree more. Her productions have made most of us to sob and to laugh naturally, as well as forced us to think deeply of what is happening in our community.

Year in year out, she has won many international awards, despite some of her movies are regarded as 'unacceptable' and 'controversial' by a small group of people. However, I believe, what she has done all these years, are not for the awards, but rather to reflect the reality in our nation, and hope to make a change.

She dares to step into the 'Inconvenient Truth'. And, her courage should be learnt and adopted by the younger generation, for the courage is what we called 1Malaysia Spirit. It's far more meaningful than those speeches or policies which are being implemented.

Hopefully, her works will be remembered in eternal. For years to come, when we can be united as one race as what has been portrayed in her productions, we shall remind ourselves, that once, there was one lady who has contributed to the nation today.

Today, we have lost a great lady, but we dont want to lose her efforts tomorrow.

To cut it short, let us have a look on some of her advertisements.
